What is a COVID-19 self-test?
A self-test is an antigenic test, which you perform yourself, using a swab inserted into the nose. COVID-19 self-tests detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. The result is obtained in 15 to 20 minutes. The sample is much easier to take than a nasopharyngeal swab because it is shallower. To increase the reliability of the test, it is necessary to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and to take the sample correctly.
Self-tests are designed to screen people over 15 years of age who have no symptoms and who are not contact persons. It allows you to know if you are a carrier of COVID-19 or not, but is only useful if it is done regularly, for example once or twice a week.
Who are self-tests for?
Self-tests are intended for asymptomatic (symptom-free), non-contact persons over 15 years of age, for private use only. It is used to determine whether or not one is a carrier of Covid-19. In the case of symptoms or contact cases, it is preferable to carry out a PCR test by nasopharyngeal swab.
Repeating the self-test once or twice a week increases the chances of detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus at the beginning of the infection, i.e. at the time when the virus is most present and most easily detectable, and especially at the time when one is most contagious. These tests therefore allow asymptomatic people to know that they are infected, to isolate themselves, to carry out a confirmatory RT-PCR test and to warn their contacts. It is a tool to help break the chain of infection as quickly as possible.
